【Abstract】 To report that progesterone is not a prerequiste for in vitro formation of nucleolar channel system(NCS)in human endometrium.Proliferative endometrium obtained from 5 women of reproductive age was divided into 2 parts,One part was cultured in a DMEM medium,to which 12% calf serum and 1% penicillin and streptomycin had been added(control group),the remaining part was cultured in the same medium containing diethylstilbestrol(25 μg/mL) plus medroxy-progesterone acetate(25 μg/mL)(E+P group).After 100 h incubation,tissues were prepared for transmission electron microscopic examination.In both E+P group and control group,the characteristic NCS was observed in the endometrial epithelium. Moreover,giant mitochondria and accumulations of glycogen were also present in the same epithelium of both groups.It was concluded,that l. Progesterone is not indispensable for NCS fomiation in human endometrium 2.The transition of proliferative endometrium to the secretory stage can occur,even without the effects of estrogen and progesterone.
