The Role of Media in the Evolution of Consumer Culture in Capitalist Society and Globalization
【Abstract】 Globalization or the expansion of the capitalist economy on a global scale is closely related to consumer culture, the information society and monopoly capitalism. The development of a consumer culture in the capitalist society accompanies the process of transformation from an earlier industrial society to a post-industrial society. It also signals the transition from competitive capitalism to monopoly capitalism. However, it is the press and the electronic media that have been leading and making the consumer needs. The invention and the diffusion of a medium often mean a new stage of capitalist economic development. Thus, it becomes understandable why transnational corporations*s market penetration and economic expansion depend upon mass media for the dissemination of consumer culture in the stage of globalization. that is, without mass media there would be no contemporary consumer society. This means no globalization.
