【Abstract】 Characteristic theory is very important in rock and soil plastic mechanics, which is expressed with Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion and is often used to determine ultimate bearing capacity and soil pressure. On the basis of Serrano’work and considering non-lineal failure of rock masses, the authors give the modified characteristic theory system based on Hoek-Brown strength criterion for isotropic rock mass.
