【Abstract】 The 20th century was an age when Chinese paintings came into the most fierce conflict with Western ones. Faced with increasing challenge of Western paintings, the first question which Chinese paintings had to answer was "In which direction will Chinese paintings be orientated?". In other words, such possible ways were totally open to Chinese paintings as whether to pave a new way by merging bob Chinese and Western styles or to become entirely westernized by thoroughly remolding themselves or to establish a new tradition on the basis of the old by adhering to their tradition.
