【Abstract】 In recent years international relations theorists in the United States have become embroiled in a fierce debate over the nature of the structure of the international system. This essay contends that the emergence of such disagreement represents a positive development in the field and has been led by the efforts of those working within the constructivist research project. It substantiates such a claim through introducing the reader to the insights that Alexander Wendt, a leading figure in the“constructivist turn" in international relations, has made in his work on structural issues. While the essay argues that Wendt’s contribution to our understanding of the structure of the international system is of great value, it also touches upon the main critiques that have been leveled against his work by realists, liberals, and other constructivists. The essay then concludes with an emphasis on the importance of a consideration of constructivism to those working on international politics outside the Western context.更多还原
