【Abstract】 Why did the 2000 United States presidential election fail to produce an undisputable winner? To answer the question, the paper examines the evolution of the American presidential electoral process, by a comprehensive and coherent narrative of the events during the 2000 election and its subsequent legal battles over the Florida recount. Reflecting back the election events and disputes, the paper analyzes how such factors as the inconsistence and confusion of the electoral laws, the politicization of the legal system, the partisan influences over the electoral process at different levels, and the effects of money contributed to the dangerous political deadlock in November-December 2000. While the anachronistical and flawed electoral process contributed directly to the failure of the election, the author argues, the legal battles that followed further revealed the undemocratic elements of the process.更多还原
