【Abstract】 Hu Sheng is a strong Marxist fighter in the cultural front of modern China and also a famous Marxistphilosopher.Under the guidance of historical materialism,he was the first one to systematically and profoundly analyze a broad sense and a narrow sense of culture and stressed that these two senses were correlated.He pointed out that culture was a kind of conceptual formation,and it could not divorce economy and politics,but it was relatively independent from them. Combining with the reality of Chinese society,he correctly discussed the cultural movement’ s direction and avenues during the War of Resistance Against Japan and put forward definitely thatscience and democracy were the majorparts of the new cultural movement. Heclaimed thatthe new cultural principle of being geared to the practice and heading for the people must be upheld.Hu Sheng convincingly criticized the cultural trend of historical idealism,which not only enriched and developed Marxist philosophical theories of culture and enlivened the atmosphere of free discussions in academic circles,but also made a contribution to propel Chinese cultural movement of Marxist philosophy into a deep level at that time.
