【Abstract】 The House of Mirth is the work that first established Edith Wharton’s literary reputaton. By dramatizing the conflict between the ideals of the old aristocracy of New york and the new industrial society of the twentieth century, she reveals the iudividual pathos and individual satisficing in the process of social change, and conveys with devastating clarity the sense of pervasive waste of human posibilities and the destruction of fine spirits in that historical period.
