THE STRUCTURAL FOUNDATION OF THE CHIEF PATHWAY FOR SECRETIONS OF MONKEY PINEAL BODY RELEASING INTO CSF:A STUDY WITH SEM/TEM
【Abstract】 Objective\ In order to explore the morphological evidence for the pathway for secretions of pineal body releasing directly into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Methods Using the conventional and NaOH macerational methods for preparing electron microscopic specimens, the pineal bodies and its capsules of adult Japanese monkeys were observed with scanning and transmission electron microscope(SEM/TEM). Results The pineal capsule was composed of a layer flattened epithelial cells and a subepithelial connective tissue. The epithelial openings were observed on and among epithelial cells facing the subarachnoid space. The subepithelial connective tissue penetrated the pineal body forming interlobular septum, and separated the pineal body to parenchymal lobules. The chief elements of connective tissue were collagen fibers; The parenchymal lobules were organized with a many pinealocytes and a few glial cells. Between parenchymal cells existed an intercellular canaliculus linking perivascular space. Conclusion Pineal intercellular canaliculus perivascular space epithelial openings made up the structural foundation of the chief channel for secretions of pineal body releasing into CSF. By the tissue channel, pineal secretions is rather easily released directly into CSF than into blood fluid.
