关于红边竹Ph.rubromarginata的验证
ON THE VERIFICATION OF PHYLLOSTACHYS RUBROMARGINATA MCCLURE
【Abstract】 The species Phyllostachys rubromarginata McClure is easily distinguished from the others belonging to the genus Phyllostachys under normal growing conditions. But the originaldescription of the spedes is based on a potted clump which does not survive, and the type collections are very slender shoots. The type and a lot of important specimens were brought tothe United States by McClure when China was invaded by Japan. The Chinese specialists arenot easy to examinate these specimens. In addition,McClure made a few of changes in the description of that species afterwards.Owing to the reason as mentioned above, there are two different opinions on the identityof the species Phyllostachys rubromarginata in Chinese specialists. Most of them consider thatPh. rubromarginata is the same species as the specimens McClure 20977,Bisset SPI 67398,alldetermined by McClure himself. The others firmly believe that the species is identical withPhyllostachys aurita J. L. Lu for culm sheath with auricles and oral setae and culm with hirsute hair on sheath scar. They maintain that the specimens McClure 20977 and Bisset SPI67398 are belonged to Phyllostachys shuchengensis Li & Wu.The authors have borrowed the type and related specimens of the species Ph. rubromarginata from Smithsonian institution. The specimens are belonged to two series: BG1426and BG1296.Series l: BG1426 contains specimens of McClure 1762,Fung 20b4o,Fung 20894 and bisset SPI 67398.McClure 1762 was collected from original clump. Some culm of clump were introducedInto the bamboo garden of former Lingnan University (now Zhong Shan University ),Guangzhou, and was given as the number of BG1426. From BG1426 the specimens Fung20045(type) and Fung 20894 were collected. The Bisset SPI 67398 was collected from thecolony No. 67398,which was Introduced into Savanna,Plant Introduction Station(USDA) byMcClure. The No. 67398 may be related to BG1426.Series 2: BG1296 was comprised of specimens McClure 1638, Fung 20600, McClure20973,Soderstrom 2b08,Bisset SPI 77000 and McClure 20977.McClure 1638 was collected from original clump. The culms of the same clump were introduced Into Lingnan University, given as the number of BG1296. From BG1296 the specimen Fung 206d0 was collected. Specimens McClure 20973 and Soderstrom 2b08 were collected from PI 66902,Bisset SPI 77000 and McClure 20977 from PI 77000. The PI 66902 and PI77000 are nos. of Plant introduction Station (USDA). The colonies under PI 16902 and PI77000 were also introduced into the United States by McClure from Southern China. Theycame from the original clump of McClure 1638 or BG1296,at least the PI 66902 did.The specimens Fung 2054b and Fung 20894 are all slender shoot or young culm withsmall culm sheath covered with white retrorse hirsute hair at the base and sometimes possessing minute auricles and a few of oral setae. Young culm is also covered with white hirsutehair on sheath scars. The presence of auricles on culm sheath and hair on sheath scar makessome people to believe these specimens to be belonged to the species Phyllostachys aurita. After examining all specimens of series 1 and 2,the writers suggest that they all are belonged to Phyllostachys rubromarginata. The presence of auricles and oral setae on culmsheath is an abnormal state as BG1426,a"table plant". These auricles and oral setae are alsofound on branch sheath of normal young culm in Ph. rubromarginata. The differences between the species Ph. rubromarginala and Ph. aurita are manifest, because they are belonged to different sections of the genus. Sometimes they are resembled insome characters, such as culm sheath with auricles and oral setae and hovered with hirsutehair on the base, the sheath scar fringed with hirsute hair. Even so,there are evident distinction between them. In Ph. rub)ximarginata the sheath auricles are minute and not elongateand only present on very small culm sheath, but in Ph. aurita, the sheath auricles are much elongate and narrowly falcate in normal state. The hirsute hair at the base of culm sheatll andsheath scar is much denser in Ph. aurita than in
