【Abstract】 Sodium 4 (4″ octyloxydiphenyl 4′ carbonyloxy)benzenesulfonate is synthesized via esterification of 4′ octyloxybiphenyl 4 carboxylic acid with sodium hydroxybenzene sulfonate using dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and 4 dimethylamino pyridine as catalysts. Its sulfonyl chloride on reaction with alcohols gives nine liquid crystals with sulfonate unit in molecules. The products have been characterized to be liquid crystals by IR, MS as well as DSC and polarizing optical microscopy techniques.
