【Abstract】 Based on free space optical interconnection technology, a broadband optical ATM switch system is introduced. Its line interface (LI) to SDH networks can fulfill most functions of PL and ATM layer. A digital Phased Locked Loop (PLL) controlled by a single chip microcomputer is designed to recover timing signal from SDH links in order that the switch can receive and route data correctly. Being ideally suitable for building reconfiguratable hardware system, Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chips are used to carry out the LI.
