【Abstract】 With the development of mobile Internet technology, mobile Short-form Video are becoming more and more popular with the public, especially college students who like to catch up with the trend, but the excessive use of Short-form Video will bring a series of negative effects, and relevant studies have found that excessive use of Short-form Video significantly reduces the subjective well-being of college students, and also leads to problems such as reduced grades, distraction and poor time management. Cognitive control refers to a series of challenging top-down mental processes. Cognitive control has three main components, namely inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility. However, previous studies have not explored the relationship between Short-form Video overuse and cognitive control and its mechanism. In order to understand the impact of Short-form Video overuse on college students’ cognitive control function, this study explores the relationship between Short-form Video overuse and cognitive control, and the mediating role of mind wandering in the relationship between the two. Mind Wandering(MW) refers to a phenomenon in which attention shifts from the current task or external event to internal spontaneous thinking and emotion. In this study, the Short-form Video overuse scale and the executive control self-rating scale were used to survey 180 college students, and the results showed that:(1) there was a significant correlation between Short-form Video overuse and cognitive control, and the more frequent the use of Short-form Video, the worse the cognitive control ability.(2) There was also a significant positive correlation between the overuse of Short-form Video and the three subcomponents of cognitive control, inhibition control, working memory and cognitive flexibility.(3) Mind wandering plays a partial mediating role between overuse of Short-form Video and cognitive control. This study confirms that excessive use of Short-form Videos does have a negative impact on the cognitive control ability of college students, which is conducive to allowing users to reasonably arrange the use of Short-form Video and prevent addiction. It can also provide new ideas for the subsequent optimization measures of the anti-addiction system for Short-form Video applications, and provide a certain basis for network regulatory authorities to standardize the operation of Short-form Video platforms.
