【Abstract】 Positive valance bias indicates speakers respond faster to positive than negative information in emotion words they had learned and used in the natural context for a long time. Few researchers paid attention to which phase when positive valance bias was acquired in the learning process or used in real context for emotion words. In this study, we reported two formal experiments on speakers learning Chinese as a second language(CSL) to investigate positive valance bias in the learning process of new Chinese emotion idioms and the effect of semantics on positive valance bias and emotion information. CSL speakers, who had acquired new Chinese emotion idioms and passed the test for learned Chinese idioms with a high accuracy rate before formal experiments, could participate in Experiment 1 later and Experiment 2. In Experiment 1, target materials were new Chinese idioms with positive and negative information. Positive valance bias in the learning process of new Chinese idioms was investigated in valance judgments. Experiment 2 used a semantic relatedness decision task to explore further semantics’ effect on positive valance bias and emotion information. Results of two experiments showed that positive valance bias appeared in the learning process of emotion idioms, and semantics conditionally influenced positive valance bias and positive information processing. In summary, positive valance bias has been acquired in the learning process of new Chinese idioms and modulated by semantic information.
