【Abstract】 The Wangfujing Paleolithic site in Beijing is one of the important sites discovered inBeijing area. The unearthed culture relics include stone and bone artifacts, fire usingremains, vertebrate fossils and hematite etc.General characteristics of the stone toolmaterials can be summarized as:the stone artifacts are mainly made on cherts. Most flakeswere mainly produced by direct hammer percussion, and some were produced by bipolarpercussion. The industry is dominated by flakes and the number of retouched pieces is verysmall.Scrapers and burins are main types of stone tools.Although the directions ofmodification vary, most pieces were retouched on dorsal surfaces.Based on detailed examinations of these bone artifacts, general characteristics of thebone materials can be summarized as:1.The bone artifacts were preserved well without suffering serious weathering orabrasion;2.Bone tools were made mainly on some animal’s femur when they had been driedin the sun for some time, instead of being fresh.3.Bone flakes are dominant in this bone assemblage.4.Most bone artifacts have not regular shapes. 5.Stone hammers are used to flake from exterior surface to cavity surface or fromcavity surface to exterior surface, and to retouch in an alternating fashion or theway to cavity surface.6.A total of 79 pieces of them are spliced into 33 bigger pieces.7.45 pieces of them have stone cutting, chopping,or scoring marks.8.Some bones dyed by Hematite powder reflect human’s religious ideology. The characteristics of cultural remains show that the site is a primary deposit and atemporary activity camp.Cutting and chopping marks on some bone artifacts reflect the lifestyle of butchering and eating animals;Scoring marks reflect exquisite humancraftsmanship. The Wangfujing culture is the culture in the Late Paleolithic. It provides valuableevidence to study the history of Beijing city as well as human activities in Beijing plain. The analysis of lithiuc typology and technology indicates that the Wangfujing industry has aclose connection with the Peking Man culture,i.e.the human culture has come down in onecontinuous line since 500 ka B.P.The Wangfujing culture is certain place amongPaleolithic cultures in China. The Wangfujing culture shares certain common characteristics in stone and boneartifacts with some other similar Paleolithic sites such as the Upper Cave,Siyu,Xiaogushanand Yanjiagang In general, this further indicates it has close affiliation to those sitesdiscovered in North China in history.
