Proton Conductivity of Sulfuric Acid Cross-link Chitosan Membrane Measured by a Four-Electrode AC Impedance Method

【Abstract】 The proton conductivities of sulfuric acid cross-link chitosan membranes were detected under various conditions with four-electrode AC impedance method. The typical impedance spectrum of cross-link chitosan membrane was obtained and shown in Fig.1. The results indicated that this method could avoid the influence of two-layer capacitance over a wide range of frequency from 10 to 104 Hz. None of the domestic papers has studied this method. The conductivities of chitosan cross-link membranes under various conditions were shown in table 1. The highest proton conductivity of 6 hours cross-link chitosan membrane was 0.047 S cm-1 at room temperature under fully hydrated conditions, and the introduction of sulfuric acid to the membrane can obviously enhance the proton conductivity. The proton conductivity activation energy of the membrane 18kJ/mol which corresponds to Grotthus mechanism, the mechanism of the proton conductivity in sulfuric acid cross-link chitosan membrane was proposed.
