【Abstract】 In September of 1983,a survey of fossil land snails was made in various places of Shan- dong Peninsula,China,e.g.Changqing,Yidu,Zhangqiu,Licheng,Wudi,Changdao,from which more than 435 specimens of 12 species and subspecies were collected.(fig.1).12 species of fos- sil land snails, which belong to 8 genera of 5 families. According to the fossil snails contained in the loess layers in shandong Province, authors divided them into two groups and established two climate patterns.,e.g.Metodontia and Ca- thaica. The number of fossil snails in the loess layers has been calculated. It shows that the fossil snails in the loess layers are good recorders of the changes of the Paleoclimate and Pa- leogeography.Authors discussed the significance of mollusk fossils in both the environment and stratigraphy, and compared the fossil snails of the Quaternary period with the habitat of the corresponding existing species. We divided them into two ecological types, and established the Paleoclimatic and Paleogeographic environments. From the analyesis of fossil snails,we can see that Metodontia and Cathaica predomina- ted in the loess layers. The distribution of the existing species of Metodontia lies mainly in Central China.i.e.from Inner Mongolia,Shanxi and Shanxi Provinces to Jiangsu and Hunan Province.Metodontita is not distributed in the subtropical zone as Guangdong Province and Zhuang Autonomous Region of Guangxi.Metodontia belongs to an intermediate type of envi- ronment. Cathaica is an animal community found in the Palaeoarctic Region, and is mainly distri- buted in the loess region to the north of the Changjiang River. When the present distribution of Cathaica is compared to the mapped loess distribution. We find that both are identical. There is no difference between the distribution of fossil Cathaica and that of the existing spe- cies.
