【Abstract】 The distribution and change in number of black-necked cranes in Yunna Province is discussed in this article, based on the records of field work and collection of relevant information and data. Some viewpoints and suggestions about quantitative investigation, population distribution and the overall study of black-necked cranes are put forward. Yunnan Province is located in the southwest of China, and its wide plateau wetlands are suitable winter habitat for black-necked cranes. Many cranes migrated to Yunnan in previous winters, but their number were not definitely recorded because of insufficient understanding and lack of scientific investigations. In the early 1980s, the distribution of black-necked cranes was fragmentarily recorded in Ninglang, Zhongdian and Lijiang in the northwest of Yunnan. Further investigation revealed addition wintering grounds in Huize, Zhaotong, Ludian, Xundian, Qiaojia, and Yongshan in the northeast of the province. Since the 1960s, the number of black-necked cranes has dramatically decreased due to increases in human population and consequent environmental destruction. As a result, the numbers of black-necked cranes are very low in certain areas. Fortunately, relevant governmental departments have begun to pay attention to protecting the cranes, and several nature reserves have been established in some regions where their populations were relatively concentrated. In these regions, the numbers of black-necked cranes have increased. Thus the finding of previously unknown wintering grounds and the establishment of reserves have played an important roles in protecting the cranes. With the expansion of the range of investigation, the standardization of research methods, the enhancement of protective work and the implementation of four years(2001-2004)of continuous synchronized statistical research, the present numbers and distribution of black-necked cranes in Yunnan have been ascertained with some certainty: as of 2004, there were 3176 distributed across nine counties of Yunnan, contrasted to 154 documented in the early 1980s.
