【Abstract】 Polyethylene glycol (PEG,molecular weight 2000) underwent slow but complicated oxidative degradation when irradiated by ultraviolet light of 365 nm in air at ambient temperature.The structural changes during the oxidative degradation have been followed by NMR spectroscopy.It was experimentally found that NMR was much more efficient than FT-IR in characterization the degradation products.Several NMR techniques (1H NMR,13C NMR,DEPT,etc.) have been used to determine the structure of the products and the results indicated that the principal degradation products were formates,carbonyl esters,hemiacetals,alcohols,aldehydes,hemiformal and methoxyl groups.A detailed mechanism for the formation of these products is proposed and discussed.
