【摘要】 <正>PURPOSE: The effective management of patients with spinal cord injuries presents an extremely challenging problem. Based on animal studies, olfactory ensheathing glial cells (OEC) have recently been shown to have a remarkable ability to repair spinal cord injuries (SCI). These cells were originally selected for transplant - mediated repair given their ability as part of the olfactory system to support continual regeneration of olfactory receptor neurons. We performed the fust central nervous system transplantation to repair damaged axons in a patient suffering from chronic SCI at the end of 2001, and have since treated more than 500 patients with SCI successfully. The purpose of this clinical trial was to determine the long - term safety of the procedure via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. METHODS: We designed a prospective clinical trial, involving ten patients with chronic SCI, to test the feasibility and biological safety of fetal OEC transplantation in the treatment of SCI. Olfactory bulbs from 3-4 month
