【Abstract】 In this paper, the characteristics of the dominant populations and the community diversity on the southern slope of the Micanshan Mountain,Shanxi Province, were analyzed. The results show that the diversity index of each quadrat had a significant negative relation to the percentage of the deciduous trees, and that populations of evergreen trees played a more important role in the forest and showed a more stable development tendency than the populations of deciduous trees, which showed a declining development tendency. In the absence of the man-made large-scale disturbance, populations of Lithocarpus cleistocarpus were found to have the strongest competitive ability and would probably become the dominant populations of the forest vegetation in this area. The spatial distribution of the main populations in this area appeared to be of the aggregated pattern.
