【Abstract】 In this paper we examine the application of the partial predictive matching compression technique(PPM) to compress Chinese text.We propose several improvements on PPM to make it more effective for Chinese text,mainly on the aspects of the organization of data structure,the management of memory and the predication of the escape code.According to the results of our experiments, the modified PPM allows the average compression ratio of Chinese text to around 9.98 bits per character and the best compression ratio to 6.59bpc.Besides,the algorithm needs no pretreatment and can be used to compress text files in other languages.更多还原
