【Abstract】 Background:West China Hospital of Sichuan University is an extra-large teaching hospital with 4,300 beds in Sichuan Province,China.Infection control is very challenging in such a large hospital in western China,a resource-limited region,particularly when infection control has not been a priority for many years and staff lacked enough training. Objectives The infection control week was held to promote the awareness of key infection control issues and to educate staff. Methods The overall theme is"Infection control,let’ s roll".The topics of each day included ’clean hands saves lives’,’Occupational safety:prevention works’ and ’good samples,right antimicrobials’. During the event,6 lectures,a skill competition about proper use of PPE and a knowledge contest about rational use of antibiotics were held.Games,such as faults finding,hands washing,shooting and darts, were organized to add fun.A stage play was performed to address the harm of antibiotic abuse.A survey on 10%participated staff that were randomly sampled was conducted 1 weeks after the event. Results A total of 4,907 person-time participated in the onsite activities,including doctors,nurses, students and support staff.The survey revealed:1) 93.2%of these surveyed thought that the whole event is helpful to update knowledge and to improve skills of infection control and prevention.2) 71.3%realized the importance of infection control via this event;3) 84.4%said that they would increase the frequency of hand cleaning during their clinical practice;and 4) 88.0%thought they leant how to properly use PPE. Conclusions The infection control week was helpful to educate staff and to promote the awareness,at least in short term,in this large hospital.For hospitals in resource-limited areas,the infection control week is likely to provide a critical,effective and affordable educational opportunity for staff there that in general lack training in infection control.更多还原
