【Abstract】 This article seeks to identify the early inhabitants of Hong Kong as indicated by place names.Based on the etymology,semantic and syntactic structure of the place names,three distinct groups have been identified.They are Zhuang,Yao and She.There is evidence to show that their place names have been subjected to differential influence by Han Chinese culture,and to support the proposal that there are three different toponymic strata in the chronology of settlement.The Zhuang place names were found to be least influenced by Han Chinese culture.Therefore Zhuang settlement should have been the earliest.Yao place names and settlement would be the second,and She the latest.更多还原
