【Abstract】 Walter Scott is the founder of English historical novels whose works have been translated into different kinds of languages which have been published in many countries.Ivanhoe is the most popular historical novel of Walter Scott which depicts a medieval knight legend in this English historical novel. At the end of the novel,Ivanhoe finally chose to marry Rowena, who is the descendant of the Saxon. It is not difficult to feel the sincere love between Ivanhoe and Rebecca. However, the Jew Rebecca leaves England ultimately.Through the research, such an ending is not only the discussion of the explanation towards the novel but also a reflection on how to construct English national identity in the nineteenth-century,the period that Walter Scott lives. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the thesis is divided into three parts. The first part analyzes the situation of English Jews both in the Middle Ages and the nineteenth-century based on the different circumstances of English Jews in different periods. Then it explores the theme of Scott’s views on the construction of national identity with the growing influence of English nationalism. The second part takes the image of the Jews in Ivanhoe as the research object, analyzing the images of the Jews in the novel as pagans, misers, and healers. It compares the similarities and differences between the images of the Jews under the influence of Anti-semitism and the English Jews in the nineteenth-century,and it probes into the process of the Jews’ participation in the construction of the English national identity.Scott gives his answer in Ivanhoe whether the Jews who have been living in England can integrate into the mainstream society of England. The third part analyzes Ivanhoe’s choice of marriage and politics and expresses his pursuit of maintaining the purity of lineage. As far back as the Middle Ages,English society was faced with the same problem: how could Jews integrate into mainstream society? Facing similar social problems, the past is the best guide of the present.Scott suggests that Jewishness plays a significant role in the construction of English national identity. From the prevailing of the allusion “The Wandering Jew” to the analysis of the leaving of the Jew Rebecca, who hasn’t accepted the conversion and kept going to wander.Jewishness as “the other” helps to reflect the current situation of England in the nineteenth-century and the future social situation in England.Rebecca leaves,Ivanhoe marries Rowena, which ensures the purity of the lineage of England and the unity of the English nation.
