【Abstract】 Beginning publication in 1951,Chinese Literature was the only official journal that systematically translated and introduced Chinese literary works and culture to western world after the foundation of People’s Republic of China. Before the Cultural Revolution, more than twenty pieces of female literature were translated to western readers, which played an important role in enhancing the influence of Chinese female literature and disseminating Chinese classics and modern literary works. However, the existing translation studies on female literature in Chinese Literature(1951-1966)mainly focused on the female images and translation strategies. The study space of language style on the female literature is quite large and meaningful. In addition,an elaborative combing shows that the present studies on language style mostly concentrate on a certain writer or a certain work,as for the reproduction of language style of a number of female literature that were created and translated in the same period,we haven’t seen. Therefore, this thesis sorts out the female literature in Chinese Literature(1951-1966)to study the reproduction of language style in its English version, aiming to answer the following three questions: what is the language style of the female literature in Chinese Literature(1951-1966)in source language? What is the change of the language style of the female literature in target texts and what are the reasons for the change? Answering these three questions has positive meaning in enriching the translation studies on the female literature on Chinese Literature(1951-1966).Based on the Chinese Stylistics of Li Yunhan and the Word Color Theory of Yang Zhenlan, the thesis analyzes the themes of the chosen female literature and the creation background of the female writers, finding that the language style of the source texts of female literature in Chinese Literature(1951-1966)is gentle. The thesis studies the reproduction of the language style of female literature in Chinese Literature(1951-1966)in target texts through mild verbs, fresh nouns and delicate adjectives in vocabularyaspect, long sentence and question sentence in sentence aspect as well as simile and personification in rhetoric aspect, and analyzes the reasons from linguistic and aesthetic differences, the requirements of external publicity translation, the identity of translators and readers’ acceptance. The study shows that in vocabulary aspect,29.07% of the words are not equivalently translated into the target texts. In sentence aspect, the long sentence in the source texts takes the proportion of 79.03%,while only takes the proportion of 31.11% in the target texts.19.62% of question sentences do not have equivalent translation in the target texts. As for rhetoric devices,39.26% of them are not equivalently translated. As a result, the gentle language style of female literature in Chinese Literature(1951-1966)in the source language is weakened in the target language. The reasons of the weakening are mainly the inherent differences between Chinese and English and the translators of Chinese Literature(1951-1966)who intentionally weakened the language style in consideration of the external publicity policy, the cultural identities and the usual practice of translation and the reception of western readers towards Chinese literary works.
