【Abstract】 Erdrich depicts three female Indian characters in The Beet Queen—Fleur Pillager, Celestine James, and Dot Adare—spanning three generations, and shows how each of them responds to the circumstances of changing times by constructing their different identities, namely caring tribalist, pliable negotiator, and determined agent, through developing their family relationships.Fleur Pillager, representing the first generation, serves as a caring tribalist who accepts both white stranger and Indian kin in her open family structure. As a traditional Indian woman, Fleur sticks to Native American traditions. She treats the white wounded kid Karl and her eventually crippled nephew Russell with her love and care.Celestine James, representing the second generation, appears as a pliable negotiator who hesitates to accept her white husband and friend in her matrilocal family structure. As the half-breed living in the white town of Argus, Celestine of mixed ancestry suffers from identity confusion. Faced with Karl and Mary breaking into her family, on the one hand, Celestine welcomes all her relations as an American Indian descendant; on the other hand, she refuses to be oppressed by white patriarchy. As a result, Celestine expels her husband and takes her sister-in-law into her family.Dot Adare, representing the third generation, acts as a determined agent who unites the displaced characters around her in her reticular family structure. Raised byCelestine and Mary with the help from Wallace Pfef as a surrogate father and meanwhile biologically connected with Karl, Dot is determined to fight against the surrounding white influence. As “the spider woman”, she unites all of her relations in her reticular family, constructing a harmonious relationship between the white, the Indian, and the mix-blood.
