浅谈《曼斯菲尔德庄园》中的四个世界

【摘要】 《曼斯菲尔德庄园》是简·奥斯丁出版的第三部小说。两百年来,它所收获的赞誉远不能与《傲慢与偏见》相比。但是,如果谈到叙事空间,这部小说却是奥斯丁六部作品中场景最为广阔的一部。1993年,爱德华·W·萨义德的《文化与帝国主义》出版。他在《简·奥斯丁与帝国》一节中详细剖析了一个鲜有人注意的地理空间——西印度群岛。此后,研究者开始将眼光转向《曼斯菲尔德庄园》中的空间研究和殖民研究。本文在继承萨义德思想的基础上,充分挖掘了书中提及的所有叙事空间,即:曼斯菲尔德庄园、朴茨茅斯、伦敦和安提瓜庄园。文章在绪论中简略介绍了两百年来国内外有关奥斯丁研究的一些成果;并企图澄清人们认为奥斯丁“叙事狭窄”的偏见。第一章主要介绍了备受瞩目的曼斯菲尔德庄园。作为四个世界中最重要的一个,奥斯丁赋予了这里舒适富足的生活环境、彬彬有礼的行为准则和传统有序的道德原则。与其他三个世界相比,这里是对抗外界纷繁变化的坚固堡垒,是范妮终身追求的安乐园。第二章主要分析了海港城市——朴茨茅斯。这是范妮的家乡,它的飞速发展意味着此时的大英帝国正雄心勃勃地向外扩展,生活在其中的中产阶级正步伐坚定地迈向海洋。第三章介绍了奥斯丁在创作中提及次数最多的首都——伦敦。这里思想先进、金钱至上,由克劳福德兄妹带来的伦敦价值观正冲击着曼斯菲尔德庄园的传统道德。第四章则主要刻画了奥斯丁隐于文后的一个世界——安提瓜庄园。虽然很少被提及,但它却对曼斯菲尔德的宁静起着不可或缺的重要作用。而在奥斯丁看似不经意却又刻意为之的话语中,我们也可窥见那个时代特殊的历史背景。
【Abstract】 Mansfield Park was the third novel published by Jane Austen. In twohundred years, it gained nothing in comparison with the praise of Pride andPrejudice. However, when it comes to narrative space,the scene in this novelwas the most extensive.In1993, Edward·W·Said’s Culture and Imperialism was published. Hedetailed analysis a geographical space--the West Indies that a few people payattention to in Jane Austen and the Empire section. Since then, researchers beganto turn to colonial studies and research space in Mansfield Park. Based onthe inheritance of Edward Said’s idea, this paper fully exploit all the narrativespace mentioned in the book, namely: Mansfield Park, Portsmouth, Londonand Antigua estate.This article in the introduction briefly describes some results related toAusten in two hundred years at home and abroad and attempt to clarify the"narrative narrow" bias people thought. The first chapter mainly introducesthe high-profile Mansfield Park. As the most important one in fourworlds,Austen gave prosperous life and comfortable environment, an orderlymannered conduct and traditional moral principles here. Compared withthe other three, Mansfield Park is a solid fortress against the ever changingexternal world and a paradise where Fanny lifelong pursuit of. The secondchapter mainly analyzes the seaport city--Portsmouth.This is Fanny’shometown,its rapidly development means the British Empire is ambitious toexpand outwards and the middle class lived in Portsmouth is firmly pace tothe ocean at this time.The third chapter introduces the capital London that Austen mentioned the most times in her novels.People here have advancedideas and believe money first. London values brought by Crawfords havemade an impact on traditional ethics in Mansfield Park. The fourth chapter ismainly portrayed a world Antigua estate where was hidden in the text byAusten. Although rarely mentioned, it palys an important role inMansfield’s quiet atmosphere.In Austen seemingly casual but deliberatediscourse, we can see that the special historical background at that time.
