【Abstract】 Ken Kesey, a vanguard of the American countercultural movement in1960s, is considered as a pusher as well as a witness of the Hippie. His masterpiece One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest has achieved the fame as a classical work of countercultural movement. This thesis attempts to analyze mad images of the novel based on carnival theory to criticize suppression of the mechanized society towards humanity and expose the real spiritual pursuit in the deep heart of the mad.First of all, the thesis begins with an introduction to Ken Kesey, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest as well as a review on previous studies both at home and abroad on this novel; besides, the purpose and values of the thesis are clearly analyzed in this part. Then, the thesis gives an interpretation of the theoretical frame, including the elementary definitions and the cultural connotations of carnival theory. And then, the inmates’ treatments on the ward are analyzed, indicating that the high-sounding cures for the mad actually functions as the cover of torment and injury, and revealing the root cause for their pursuit of carnival life. Nest, the thesis uses carnival theory to examine the carnival celebrations of the mad, exposing their carnival pursuit for reverse side of the existing world and individual freedom. Finally, the thesis draws a conclusion that madness might be perceived not as a mental illness, but as a symbol of failure of social development on account of the mechanized transform. And what’s more important is that the rebellious and subversive spirit against the established authority and moral fetters finally help the mad images clinch the carnival of victory. This thesis attempts to deepen readers’ understanding of the themes and value of the times by analyzing the mad images from perspective of carnival theory. It may broaden the intellectual mind of future studies on the novel; to a certain extent, the thesis advances enlightenment on establishing a harmonious and equal society by the subversion of absolute power.
