【Abstract】 In literary translation studies, translation studies on children’s literature (hereinafter referred to as CL) is relatively marginalized compared with other literary genres due to the special text recipient of target text. Nevertheless, at the beginning of the 20th century, the new literary men successively raised ground-breaking literary theories of "human’s literature" and "children’s literature" with the surge of May 4th Movement and New Literature Movement. Some new writers and translators turned their eyes to the introduction of foreign CL, whose practices and ideas diverged from that of late Qing dynasty and early Republic years and triggered off public and academic attention to practice and research of CL translation in China. In the fervor of CL translation came the publication of "Andersen Special Issue" in Volume 8 and 9 of Short Story Magazine. As the only special issue for CL in May 4th period of immense value to translation studies, it promotes not only the translation of Andersen’s fairy tales, but also the development of Chinese CL. The thesis attempts to investigate the source text (hereinafter mentioned as ST) selection and translation strategies of the special issue under the guidance of Lefevere’s theory of ideology, poetics and patronage. The publication of the special issue is based on the translators’outlook on literature and translation. Henceforth, the thesis firstly looks into the translators of the special issue and summarizes the common points among them. The ST selection is closely related to the ideology of the translators and the patronage. As the publisher of Short Story Magazine, Commercial Press makes impact on the special issue via the management ideas, the tradition of translation and textbook publication and the reforms in all subordinate journals and magazines. Besides, as individual patrons, Zheng Zhen-duo and Zhou Zuo-ren affect the translators through their ideological and poetological ideas. Zheng Zhen-duo is both the editor-in-chief of Short Story Magazine and the secretary of Society for Literary Research, whose mixed identity helps blend the management ideas of Commercial Press with the poetics of Society for Literary Research. Last but not least, the translators follow the popular literal translation on one hand, and adopt liberal translation and adaptation on the other hand, in view of the idea of "CL based on children’s need"(“‘儿童本位’的儿童文学”)and their consciousness of text recipient. The interaction and integration among ideology, poetics and patronage is clearly demonstrated in the translation of the special issue. In his study on translation, Lefevere does not go beyond the separate components into the relationship among them. Nonetheless, it is justified that translation is a dynamic process via the interaction and integration among ideology, poetics and patronage. The studies on CL translation are far from enough compared with those on other literary genres. There is not monographic study on the special issue in China’s mainland until now. On the basis of existing material, the present study makes a comprehensive and detailed investigation into the special issue in a synchronic and diachronic way, which intends to complete the history of CL in China and promotes the translation studies on CL
