【摘要】 美国著名女作家赛珍珠的《水浒传》英译本在西方广受欢迎,在中国却很受争议。一直以来国内对赛译本就褒贬不一,甚至是贬多于褒。以往对她译文的批评主要是认为其译文太过中文化而忽视了中西文化间的差异,因而她的这种翻译是对原著的“误读”;近年来对她译文的褒扬则主要是肯定了她的译作在保持中国语言之独立性的作用,所以她的译文能更好的传播中国文化,达到中西文化交流的目的。为什么赛珍珠的译本如此特殊以至于国内专家学者们对其评价有如此天壤之别呢?本文将从文化相对论的角度来对此问题进行探讨。从赛珍珠的译本中我们可以看出她的文化观。她从小生活在两个世界中,受到东方和西方文化的熏陶。然而由于当时的东西方间文化隔阂还是很深,身处两种文化之间的赛珍珠作为一名文化边缘人,其坎坷的经历让她意识到文化间必须学会互相尊重,只有这样才能达到文化交流和最终的文化融合,推动人类文化的共同进步。她的这种思想正是文化相对论思想的体现,即:在这个世界上存在着各种各样的文化,我们不应该拿某种规则或原则作为普遍的标准来对所有的文化下结论,因为一种价值观总是由一种文化体系所决定的,不存在超越文化的价值观。本文借助文化相对论作为理论工具,来探究赛珍珠文化相对论思想的形成原因,从而解释其特殊翻译的成因。通过描写赛珍珠的翻译过程,翻译特色以及其译本在中西方的接受情况,本文将进一步解释为什么她选择的翻译策略是受到她独特文化观的影响。为了使论述更加完整,本文的第五章将从赛译本中选取一些有代表性的例子进行分析,来看看赛珍珠的文化观点是如何反映在其译本中的,并且仍从文化相对论的角度来探讨下赛译本在肯定不同文化的价值,提倡多元文化的必要性这方面的重大意义。虽然近年来国内学者开始重新审视赛珍珠的译本,但还没有人从文化相对论的角度来进行探讨,而对其译本的肯定也仅仅是局限于褒扬其译本对中国文化在中西文化交流中明确身份和保持独立性上的意义。借助文化相对论来研究赛译本的《水浒传》能帮助我们深化对赛珍珠以及其作品的认识,给赛珍珠一个客观,公正的评价。同时也希望在以后的研究中我们也能具备文化相对论的精神,这对于我们研究像赛珍珠这样的文化边缘作家以及文化间的和谐共处都是有借鉴的。更多还原

【Abstract】 The famous American female writer Pearl S. Buck’s translation All Men Are Brothers is warmly welcomed in the West, but is very controversial in China. Opinions on her version have always been mixed,but there are more derogatory than praises. In the past scholars thought that her version is over-Chinese and ignores the differences between Chinese and Western cultures, hence her translation is a“misunderstanding”of the original book; recently the praises on her version affirm the function of her translation in maintaining the identity of Chinese language, so her translation can better spread Chinese culture and realize the purpose of cultural exchange. Why is Pearl’s version so special that it received such different comments before and after? This dissertation intends to study the question from the theory of cultural relativism.From Pearl’s translation we can find her cultural viewpoint. She grew up in a double world and was influenced by both the Chinese and Western cultures. But she lived in an era when cultural barriers between the West and East were still very deep. As a cultural margin, her rough experiences taught her to be tolerant to other cultures. Only by this can we achieve the purpose of cultural exchange and the final cultural integration, promoting the progress of the whole human culture. Her cultural attitude is just the embodiment of cultural relativism, that is, in this world there exist various kinds of cultures, and we should not make a conclusion on all cultures by some kind of rules or principles, because one value is always determined by one culture, and there exist no such values that can transcend cultures.With the help of the theory of cultural relativism, this dissertation intends to find the reason for the formation of Pearl S. Buck’s cultural attitude, which inevitably leads to her special translation. By describing her translation process, translation features and the acceptance of her translation in China and the West, this dissertation tries to further explain why her adoption of translation strategies is affected by her cultural attitude. To make the analysis more complete, in the fifth chapter some examples are chosen to study how her cultural attitude is reflected in her translation. This chapter still gives an analysis from the perspective of culture relativism on the great significance of Pearl’s translation of All Men Are Brothers on affirming the values of different cultures and the necessity of promoting multi-cultures.Although recently domestic scholars began to reconsider Pearl’s translation, no one has studied it from the angle of cultural relativism; what’s more, their affirmation on her version is still limited to praising her translation on marinating the identity and the independence of Chinese culture in the exchange of Chinese and Western cultures. Studying Pearl’s All Men Are Brothers by cultural relativism can help us deepen our understanding of Pearl the writher and her various works, so we can give a more objective and justified evaluation on her. Meanwhile, I hope in the future studies that we can also be armed with the spirit of cultural relativism,which will be useful for us to study cultural margins like Pearl S. Buck and it is also helpful for us to study how to achieve the harmonious coexistence of cultures.更多还原
