【摘要】 凯特·肖邦的长篇小说《觉醒》一书以写实手法描写了一位生活在19世纪美国女权社会的妇女对个性和自由的大胆追求。小说一出版,舆论一片哗然。传统观念的卫道士对《觉醒》横加指责,不仅把这部小说列为禁书,并把肖邦也逐出当地的文化圈。这使正值创作高峰的肖邦骤然止笔,并在五年后默默死去。肖邦和她的作品在以后的几十年间几乎被人遗忘。直到半个世纪后,评论界对肖邦及其作品才给予重新评价。现代评论家们已注意到肖邦出色的细节描写能力及丰富的想象力,并认为这部曾给她带来灾难性后果的小说实为一部经典作品。本文作者认为,为了更好的表达主题,肖邦赋予女主人公许多双性同体特征。在前人研究的基础之上,本文作者试图借用弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫的双性同体理论来分析女主人公的形象。在作者看来,埃德娜实际上就是集合了男女双性特征于一体的女性形象。本文分为五个部分。第一章简单介绍了肖邦及小说《觉醒》。然后阐明本文的论点,并介绍论文的论述方法及其结构。第二章是文献综述部分,作者回顾了评论界对肖邦及其小说《觉醒》的研究。第三章介绍作者在本文中采用的伍尔夫双性同体理论。第四章,作者试图从内外因素两方面分析女主人公埃德娜的双性同体形象,认为埃德娜在内外因素的影响下最终成为一位新女性：即获得双性同体的特征。最后一章总结了本文的观点：在埃得娜成为双性同体的新形象后,她最终选择死亡,进入永恒。更多还原

【Abstract】 The Awakening, Kate Chopin’s greatest literary achievement, was published in 1899. The immediate response to the novel after its publication was overwhelmingly negative. It aroused great hostility among contemporary reviewers because it traced the psychological and sexual awakening of a woman at a time when the society tried to deny. Not only was the publication of the book prohibited but Chopin herself was also forced to stop writing. However, after 50 years, the critical world began to reevaluate the special woman writer and reexamine her writing. Modem critics have noticed the abundant detailed description and imagination of the book. They have found that the book that brought disaster to Chopin in the past is in fact a classic.In order to represent the theme deeply, in the writer’s opinion, Chopin consciously or unconsciously incorporates the protagonist Edna Pontellier with some androgynous characteristics. Based on the predecessors’study on The Awakening, the writer of this paper tries to interpret the new image of Edna with the help of Woolf’s androgyny theory. In his opinion, Edna actually becomes an androgynous woman, or a new woman in the end who embodies both feminine and masculine characteristics.This paper tries to produce the author’s thought in five chapters:Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the author and the novel. Chapter Two deals with the past examinations on The Awakening. Chapter Three gives a brief introduction to the concept androgyny which the writer of this paper adopts to interpret the image of the protagonist Edna Pontellier.
