【Abstract】 The thesis is a comparative study on the translations of Tao Te Ching, the most translated traditional Chinese classic with extremely profound implications. On the basis of the Skopos theory and Hermeneutics, the thesis focuses on the cultural transferences in three English versions of TTC respectively by James Legge, Arthur Waley and Lin Yutang, in search of more nearly appropriate strategies for better cultural communication. In accordance with the Skopos theory, translation is related with a purpose. Thus the author of the thesis makes a point that this purpose finds itself within a socio-cultural context which engenders translation and partially shapes the translator’s strategies. Therefore, in a macro perspective, the author compares and analyses the social, cultural backgrounds connected with the three versions, followed by the life experiences of three translators, and, finally, their purposes and strategies in translating TTC. The author seeks for subtle differences of shared strategies by James Legge, a missionary on an oriental pilgrimage, Arthur Waley, a great Asian scholar who never traveled Asia, and Lin Yutang, a celebrated Chinese master of Chinese culture. With reference to hermeneutics, the thesis delves into the translations of culture-loaded terms in TTC in a micro perspective. Generally speaking, all the three versions show the three translators’ linguistic brilliance and, more importantly, their in-depth analysis of the philosophical implications of these terms. The thesis also illustrates that Legge’s and Waley’s translations are occasionally colored with the influence of Christian mode of thinking and that Lin occasionally could have had too high an expectation of target readers’ knowledge for their reception of translation, which does not spoil his overall excellence of translation.Decoding translations of TTC should be as charming as deciphering TTC, culturally speaking. Appropriately locating the readers within a contemporary socio-cultural context of the western world will lead to a more nearly suitable orientation for the translators to facilitate the dissemination of Chinese culture now.
