【摘要】 林纾是一个矛盾的个体。他与“五四”新文化运动的矛盾关系，很大程度上影响人们对他的客观评价。对于这种矛盾关系，我们今天可以从坚持传统文化、“五四”运动大背景、与当代对传统文化复兴的对比这三个角度来作重新认识，从中既看到林纾可爱之处，也正视其可笑之处，同时揭示出对复兴传统文化的意义之处。确立林纾文学地位的仍旧是其小说翻译。他在翻译方面的卓越贡献已得到充分肯定，“林译小说”对中国小说理论作出了较大贡献，正是它提升了中国小说的地位，使晚清小说能够在极短的时间内上升为主流；它打破章回体，拓宽了小说的题材和形式，体现出了强烈的反帝反封建要求，提倡小说中的平民意识，将同情关注的目光投向下等社会，首次大胆提出现代性爱意识，为中国翻译事业的繁荣开了先河。他对中西文学比较研究的探索为后人奠定了基础；鲁迅、周作人、郭沫若、朱自清和冰心等“五四”一批著名作家均受其译作影响。重新认识林纾与“五四”新文化运动的矛盾关系，对林纾翻译的贡献予以挖掘，我们才能正确评价林纾的历史地位及其影响。更多还原

【Abstract】 Lin Shu was a man of contradictions. The incompatible relationship between Lin’s idea and the May 4th New Culture Movement of 1919 largely influences people’s objective judgment on Lin. This relationship, however, can be re-evaluated through perspectives of sticking to traditional culture, the background of the May 4^th Movement and the revitalization of traditional culture in contemporary times. It helps us clearly see the merits and demerits of Lin’s idea as well as the significance to rejuvenate traditional culture. Lin’s status in literary history was based on his translation of novels. And his outstanding contribution to translation has been fully affirmed. Lin’s translated works greatly contributed to the development of the theories on Chinese novels. They largely promoted the status of Chinese novels in the world and helped the novels of the late Qing Dynasty become mainstream literary works in a short period of time. He translated novels in a style other than the traditional type of Chinese novels, that is, the division of a novel into chapters headed by a couplet giving the gist of the contents. Lin helped develop the themes and genres of Chinese novels and showed a strong desire of fighting against imperialism and feudalism in his translated works. Through the novels Lin promoted awareness of civilians and showed compassion to the lower classes of the Chinese society. He also took the lead in China to promote modern consciousness of sexual love. Lin greatly helped the prosperity of translation in China. Lin’s comparative research of Chinese and Western literature laid a foundation for scholars of later generations. A group of famous writers in the period of the May 4^th Movement, including Lu Xun, Zhou Zuoren, Guo Moruo, Zhu Ziqing and Bing Xing, benefited from his translations. We can only have a reasonable judgment of Lin’s status and influence in Chinese history when we re-evaluate the contradictory relationship between Lin Shu and the May 4^th New Culture Movement as well as the contribution of Lin’s translation to the Movement.更多还原
