【摘要】 自传体文学,正如其传主一样,魅力四射;其文学价值、文化内涵、历史意义、心理效用和教诲功能是独一无二的,是其他任何文类都无法比拟的。世界著名传记作家托马斯?卡莱尔指出:“历史是无数传记的结晶。”著名学者胡适认为自传的价值是“给史家做材料,给文学开生路。”正因为如此,近几十年来,自传这一文类越来越引起文学、文化和历史研究的关注。自传文学正在挑战文学经典的传统定义和地位。纵观自传文学的发展历程和现状,美国无疑是这一文学类型的新兴王国。回顾20世纪早期,美国拥有亨利·亚当斯、亨利·詹姆斯等世界著名自传作家;18世纪,出现了本杰明·富兰克林和乔纳森·爱德华兹等开这一文类先河的鼻祖。19世纪是美国自传文学高速发展时期,这一时期,涌现出了像弗雷德里克·道格拉斯、哈利特·雅各布等一批杰出的自传作家。该世纪的自传文学,无论其创作数量,还是文学价值,都可与虚构文学相媲美,且在文学领地牢固占据了半壁江山。二战后,非虚构散文在美国的兴起,推动了各种自传体写作——忏悔录、回忆录、游记、日记——的长足发展,最终把自传文学的写作推向了高潮。自传写作之所以能在美国这片土壤中一枝独秀,是与美国文化中鼓励自我奋斗、自我实现这一价值观密不可分的。即,自传这一文类与美国文化中追求自我认同和自我表现的人生信念和哲理相契合,是界定自我认同与民族意识这一关系的最为恰当的文学表达形式。正因为如此,自传作品成为考察和理解美国历史文化的主要对象。美国自传文学创作主体所承载的文化意义的多元性,使自传文学也相应地承载着多元的文化内涵。自传文学既承载文化内涵,又构建文化形态。自传成了美国在文学形式上最为直接的文化表达。相应地,美国多元文化为美国自传文学的发展起了决定性的推动作用,呈现在我们眼前的是美国土著自传、黑人自传、女性自传、移民自传、宗教自传,可谓百花齐放,百家争鸣。美国自传文学与美国文化互为阐发,互为依托。影响自传文学发展的最为直接的文化内容是美国独立进取的“个人主义”和锲而不舍、追求成功人生的“美国梦”。另外,自传文学是美国道德操守的一种精神载体,践行着无论是宗教的还是世俗的道德教化功能。自传的文学价值,一直以来颇受批评界的非议。但纵观美国自传文学,完全有理由确认其在文学王国中的地位和价值。自传的文学性不仅存在于文本,而且存在于自传传递给读者的启迪和教化意义。这种真实的精神感召力和震撼力所具有的审美体验是虚构文学难以企及的。自传既然是传主的历史记录,就具有见证历史的史学价值。一部富兰克林自传,就是一部“美国资本主义的摇篮史”。更多还原

【Abstract】 Autobiography in America becomes undoubtedly a lively interest both in and out of academe at present time. Autobiographical mode strongly marks American writing from the start and autobiography fully flowers as a literary genre in America. The writing course of American autobiography may be roughly divided into four periods chronologically. The history of autobiographical writing in America is relatively short, but solidly established as a literary genre.There are at least two factors found seemingly specific to America contributing to the prosperity of this genre, that is, one is the so-called American Dream, and the other, the American Individualism. Autobiographical act is not only as a literary expression of the personal fulfillment, but as a moral performance. By presenting their personal stories, autobiographers attempt not only to make sense of their lives but also to suggest a set of moral norms and values.Culture finds its way in autobiography, and the pluralist nature of American culture has been decisive in the development of American autobiography. Life history provides a valuable resource for speculating concretely about cultural change and the larger problem of periodizing history, it is, therefore, not surprising that it holds an attraction not only to literary critics and theorists of the self and of the genre, but to sociologists, anthropologists, psychiatrists, philosophers, and even theologians.Autobiography is unquestionably a document about a life, but it is also a work of art; autobiographical writing is aware of its stylistic harmony and the beauty of its images.The land of America feeds up its autobiography; likewise, American autobiography defines America. This link makes autobiographical mode become a new kingdom of literary genre in this land, and America a kingdom of autobiography.更多还原
