对《代数学》和《代数术》术语翻译的研究

【摘要】 本文主要研究和探讨《代数学》和《代数术》的术语翻译,包括以下几方面的内容: 1.简要回顾清代的中国数学及当时的中国为数学的发展所营造的文化和社会环境,说明《代数学》和《代数术》的汉译背景。并指出李善兰、华蘅芳、伟烈亚力和傅兰雅四译著家在翻译传播西学中所做的工作。2.通过分析资料可以看到在数学术语翻译的道路上李善兰、华蘅芳等人所探索和遵循的一些术语翻译规则和方法,同时重新理解和评价他们为中国近代的科技翻译所做出的重要贡献。说明其中已具有了现代翻译理论的一些重要因素。译著者试图努力地保持其形式和表述上的传统性,而当数学内容超出其所能表现的范围时,符号和译名的再创造成为必然。3.通过研究《代数学》和《代数术》中几个基本代数术语如“代数”“方程”等的形成,说明在翻译西方代数学著作的过程中对传统术语的取舍与改造以及创造新术语的方法,进而理解近代中西数学知识的碰撞和融合,理解两种不同文化的交流过程。本文的研究表明,术语与其所表述的数学内容之间的差异反映当时数学术语在翻译时不能保证单义性和系统性。4.概述《代数学》和《代数术》对清末代数术语的影响及其对清末代数术语的传播与普及的作用,说明对西方数学文化的认知和接受是在中国传统数学文化的历史基础上进行的。本文对《代数学》和《代数术》中的代数术语做了全面的统计分析,并与《代数备旨》等清末流行的代数著作进行比较,从术语翻译的角度考查了汉译本《代数学》和《代数术》在中国近代数学演进过程中的价

【Abstract】 This thesis mainly studies and discusses the Chinese terminology translation of De Morgan’s Elements of Algebra and Wallis’s Algebra. It includes the following aspects : 1. By briefly reviewing the Chinese mathematics in Qing Dynasty and the cultural and social environment for the development of mathematics in China at that time, the thesis explains the background of Chinese translation of the books of Elements of Algebra and Algebra. In addition, the thesis points out the contributions of the four translators such as Li Shanlan, Hua Hengfang, Alexander Wylie and John Fryer to the translation of western treatises of science. 2. By analyzing the materials, we may learn some rules and methods of terminology translation. They were explored and followed by Li Shanlan and Hua Hengfang on the path of the mathematics terminology translation. At the same time, we can re-understand and re-appraise their important contributions to the science and technology translation in modern China. It shows that some factors of the theory of modern translation have been used in the translation of the two treatises. The translators did their best to attempt to maintain the tradition of the terms and their expression. However, when the mathematics contents surpassed their scopes in which the traditional terminology can be expressed properly, the re-creation of the signs and the terms became an inevitable trend in the translation process. 3. The thesis studies the formation of several basic algebraic terms such as "algebra", "equation" in the book of Elements of Algebra and Algebra. Then, it unfolds the destiny of the traditional terms and the forming process of new mathematics terms in the translation course of the western modern algebra works. In this way, we can understand the collision and the fusion phenomena of Chinese and the Western mathematics knowledge in modern times. In addition, we can learn the exchange process of two kinds of cultures. The discrepancies between the mathematics contents and terminology reflected that singular-meaning and systematic-feature could not be kept in the translation of the signs and the terms. 4. The thesis outlines the influence of Elements of algebra and Algebra on algebraic terminology as well as popularization of algebraic terminology towards the end of the Qing Dynasty. It proofs that the Chinese cognition and acceptance to the western mathematics culture were carried on the foundation of China’s traditional mathematics culture. The thesis studies the terms in the two mentioned works from the point of views of statistics, and compares them with that in some popular algebra books such as Outline of Algebra. This thesis also reviews the value of Chinese edition of Elements of algebra and Algebra in modern Chinese mathematics evolution at terminology translation angle. And by studying the translated names of mathematics terminology carefully and profoundly, the author affirms the important contributions of the two Chinese edition books to forming the modern terminology.
