【摘要】 逗号作为英语书面语的一个重要结构表达方式，跟汉语逗号的用法有所不同。在学习英语时，受汉语母语的干扰，学生往往不能正确地理解和使用英语的逗号。不少从事英汉翻译的实践者也经常忽略逗号的用法，致使译作时有缺憾。 为此，本文第一章从英汉语逗号的基本用法着手，通过大量文献实例，详实而又有所侧重地论述了两者间存在的异同。在此基础上，本文第二、三章标新立异，运用语音语调原理、写作、修辞、美学、语义学等方面的知识，通过详实的文献实例，全面地论述了英汉语逗号的修辞和语义功能：从修辞功能的角度看，逗号可以用以进行澄清、解释、替代、强调、对比、补充，或是取得生动和幽默的效果，等等；从语义功能的角度看，逗号本身可以作为信息载体，暗含特定的意思，在更多的情况下，它本身不含意义，但它的使用与否会引起整个句子意思的变化。以前三章的论述为依据，本文第四章从英汉翻译的角度，通过正反两方面的实例，探讨了对逗号用法处理较为成功和欠有不妥之处的译作，由此提出了一些关于逗号在英汉翻译中的处理建议。 最后，本文在再次强调逗号的重要性的同时，建议英语学习者和研究者们重新认识标点符号的重要性，并予以充分的重视。更多还原

【Abstract】 The comma is the most frequently used punctuation mark, but it is often abusively used as well. Many English learners and translators seldom attaches adequate importance to it, so it is no wonder for them to make this or that mistake about it.This paper, made up of four chapters, is thus designed to make a thorough study of the use of the comma in English and Chinese. The first chapter makes a synoptic comparison of the similarities and differences between the basic uses of the comma in English and Chinese. Grounded on the first chapter, new and original in content, the second and the third chapters, employing the theories in phonetics, writing, rhetoric, semantics and aesthetics, further discusses the rhetorical and the semantic functions of the comma in English and Chinese: rhetorically speaking, the comma can be used to clarify, to expound, to substitute, to emphasize, to contrast, to complement, or to vivify; semantically speaking, the comma itself can carry information to indicate certain meaning, or the presence and absence of the comma can cause semantic changes. The fourth chapter applies what has been discussed in the previous chapters to English-Chinese translation. In this last chapter, some successful examples of translation concerning the use of the comma are analyzed in detail, and contrastively, some ill-considered examples, together with the writer’s corresponding suggestions of improvement are also provided.Last, the paper proposes that more research should be done on the comma, and other punctuation marks as well.更多还原
