In What Respects is the “Moral Copper Rule” Superior to the “Moral Golden Rule”
【Abstract】 To assign the “Other” a more prominent status in moral thinking and emphasize the irreducible differences between the “moral patient” and the “moral agent,” Huang Yong proposes the “Moral Copper Rule” as a means to surpass the traditional “Moral Golden Rule,” substantiating his claim through a detailed argument rooted in traditional Chinese philosophical resources. This paper argues, however, that significant issues persist within both the conceptual content of Huang’s “Copper Rule”(as well as related concepts like the “Platinum Rule”) and his argumentative strategy. Crucially, the core insights Huang seeks to convey via the “Copper Rule” can be fully articulated through a proper interpretation and elucidation of the “Golden Rule” itself. Moreover, by substituting the “Golden Rule” with the “Copper Rule,” Huang unnecessarily sacrifices a hallmark virtue of the former—the practical principle of “finding a metaphor in what is near”(neng jin qu pi).
