【Abstract】 The emergence of medical discourses on spa therapy, seaside resorts, and maritime medical travel in nineteenth-century medicine catalyzed the rise of health resorts such as spa towns and seaside resorts.These emerging spaces captured the attention of writers of that period, and were frequently incorporated into the settings of their novels. Literary descriptions of medical travel spaces not only traced the development of medical discourses on spa therapy, seaside resorts and maritime medical travel, but also exposed the complex realities and spatial politics obscured by medical discourse through characters’ embodied experiences within these spaces: spa baths were supposed to be ideal places for physical and mental liberation and healing, yet they failed to eliminate the class differences inherent in space; seaside resorts aligned with the appropriation of nature and colonial logic; and the mythology of maritime medical travel laid bare the ambitions of British colonial expansion.更多还原
