International Perspectives on Multimodal Argumentation:Major Debates and Predominant Research Paradigms
【Abstract】 Over the past three decades, argumentation studies have witnessed a notable evolution from early work on visual argumentation in the mid-1990s to the broader field of multimodal argumentation, extending the research focus beyond verbal centrism to encompass visual, auditory, and other non-verbal modalities. Based on a systematic review of leading international literature from Web of Science and Google Scholar, this paper reviews three core areas of inquiry: 1) the essence of argumentation and the legitimacy of non-verbal argumentation, 2) the interpretation and reconstruction of multimodal arguments, and 3) the mechanisms of multimodal coordination and the role of genre conventions. Five predominant research paradigms are then identified, namely informal logic, pragma-dialectics, rhetorical argumentation, practical argumentation, and integrative approaches. Such interdisciplinary synthesis yields robust analytical frameworks, enabling effective explanations of complex argumentation in real-world communication. Looking forward, research should foster stronger theoretical connections with frontier fields such as multimodal social semiotics and multimodal discourse analysis. Methodologically, empirical research and advanced computational analysis represent promising trends, particularly regarding the interactive mechanisms between multimodal argumentation and audience cognition in digital contexts. Thus, multimodal argumentation studies hold substantial innovative value, offering practical implications for enhancing the public’s persuasive abilities and fostering critical thinking.
