Rhetorical Strategies of the Emerging Euphemistic Construction “Surname+Mou+Final Character of Given Name” in Journalistic Discourse
【Abstract】 This paper investigates the emerging Chinese euphemistic construction, “Surname + Mou + final character of given name, ” which has gained prominence in journalistic and media discourse. Based on the cognitive disparity in character distinctiveness within Chinese names, this form retains the final character of the given name to enhance referential accessibility. Anchored in cognitive linguistics and rhetorical theory, this study examines how this structure improves the credibility of referential expressions in specific cognitive-pragmatic contexts. Unlike conventional euphemistic forms such as “Surname + Mou” or “Surname + Moumou,” the inclusion of the final name character of the given name serves as a cognitively salient reference point. This pattern is shown to be a rhetorical strategy driven by intersubjectivity, which balances anonymity with transparency in discourse. Particularly prevalent in contemporary online media, the form is pragmatically oriented toward enhancing reader engagement. It fulfills multiple discourse functions including strengthening evidentiality, enabling stance negotiation, and shaping the social identity of the referent by modulating accessibility.
