Urban Captivity Narrative as the Political Barometer of the Post-9/11
【Abstract】 Urban captivity narrative emerged in the early period of the 21 st-century American literary arena, telling stories of contemporary city girls being kidnapped and held in captivity. Similar to the Indian captivity narrative, these narratives, mostly written by women captives, telling their stories after they returned home and to some extent empowered them, not only reflect the social reality of American society, but also reveal the changes in the post-9/11 American political environment, illuminating the turn toward the political right wing and conservative social atmosphere. What is worth noticing is how urban captivity narrative is appropriated by the dominant social discourse to maintain the traditional middle-class values, and constrain and suppress women and the cultural other.
