Manufacturing Cultural Memory: The Mediation Practice of a Bamboo Slips Museum
【Abstract】 In ancient China, bamboo and wooden slips served as communication media rather than objects intentionally preserved by contemporary people for future generations. As a result, there were discontinuities during the process of inheritance. The modern museum represents a material condition for the existence of ideas. It is precisely through the intermediary role of the “museum” that the concept of “China in the words of bamboo museum” has become a cultural memory that modern people need to acquire. It involves three levels in practice.First, museums expand the subject of memory from experts to the general public in society.Second, fragmented, amorphous, and unrelated bamboo slips are re-contextualized by museums, bringing cultural relics related to the fate of modern nations into the public eye and making them objects of cultural memory; bamboo slip museums intervene in public education systems and mass media, guiding the public’s “viewing” toward the historical context of Chinese culture represented by these slips, thereby facilitating the diffusion of cultural memory across broader social spaces.
