【Abstract】 To investigate the diversity of mammals and birds in the Jiacha Canyon, the study area was divided into 0.5 km × 0.5 km grids using GIS between December 2019 and March 2021, and 85 infrared cameras were deployed, with data collected every 3 – 5 months. A total of 15,270 camera-trap days were recorded, yielding 65,581 identifiable photos and videos of birds and mammals, with 6,006 valid detections. The data included18 species across 9 families in 4 orders of wild mammals, and 46 species across 16 families in 6 orders of birds. Among them, there are 7 species of wildlife under Class I national protection and 19 species under Class II national protection, together accounting for 40.63% of the total number of wildlife species recorded. According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, 2 species were listed as Endangered(EN), 4 as Vulnerable(VU), and 6 as Near Threatened(NT), together accounting for18.75% of the total number of the recorded species. Based on the?Red List of China’s Vertebrates, 1 species was classified as Critically Endangered(CR), 5 as Endangered(EN), 5 as Vulnerable(VU), and 8 as Near Threatened(NT), together accounting for 29.69% of the total number of the recorded species. The top five mammal species with the highest relative abundance indices are all protected species: Macaca mulatta, Przewalskium albirostris, Capricornis milneedwardsii, Vulpes vulpes, and Pseudois nayaur. The top five bird species with the highest relative abundance indices are Trochalopteron henrici, Phoenicurus leucocephalus, Crossoptilon harmani, Turdus albocinctus, and Phoenicurus schisticeps. The findings show that the Jiacha Canyon has high species diversity with many rare and endangered species. Human activity in the Jiacha Canyon, located outside protected area, is both widespread and frequent; disturbances are generally concentrated along Provincial Highway S306 and throughout the valleys. The canyon still continues to support wildlife communities of significant conservation value, which have persisted despite substantial human disturbance in the area. Accordingly, it is recommended that relevant authorities strengthen conservation and management efforts in this area to protect its numerous rare and endangered species.
