An Analysis of Hellenistic Artistic Elements in the Decorative Motifs of a Red-Ground Felt Robe with Confronted Human, Animal, and Tree Patterns Excavated from the Yingpan Site in Yuli County
【Abstract】 TThe red-ground felt robe with confronted human, animal, and tree motifs excavated from the Yingpan site in Yuli County, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, is distinguished by its highly specific decorative style and constitutes a valuable case for examining cultural interaction and coexistence along the Silk Road during the Han and Jin periods. A combined analysis of the decorative motifs and relevant archaeological evidence indicates that the patterns exhibit clear characteristics of Hellenistic art. While the felt material may have been introduced from the Kushan region, the structural form of the garment is firmly grounded in local traditions of the Western Regions and was most likely produced locally. This finding demonstrates the selective appropriation and localized reinterpretation of Hellenistic artistic elements by elite groups in the Western Regions. It also reflects the inclusive and symbiotic nature of multicultural interaction along the Silk Road and provides further insight into Xinjiang’s role as a key hub in inter-civilizational exchanges within the Silk Road network.
