【Abstract】 History of the Southern Dynasties(Nan Shi) and History of the Northern Dynasties(Bei Shi), compiled by Li Yanshou, adopt the family biography style that takes the family as the boundary, integrating clansmen scattered across various dynasties into a single biography. From historiographical perspective, this format inherits the spiritual essence of the “Hereditary Houses” in Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian(Shi Ji), as well as the family narrative experience from Book of the Restoration of Jin(JinZhong XingShu) and Book of Wei(Wei Shu). It also upholds his father’s scholarly ambition, transforming the original chronological compilation concept into the practical practice of family biographies. Socially, it accurately aligns with the core characteristics of the aristocratic clans in the Wei-Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, holding official positions across successive regimes for generations and maintaining an unbroken line of cultural inheritance. It breaks the limitation of dynastic history narrative that fragmented clan lineages, fully preserving the aristocratic families’ political activities, cultural lineages, and family traditions. Politically, it meets the historical demand of the early Tang Dynasty to integrate the north and the south and construct a “great unification” political order, eliminating the regional prejudices of mutual denigration in the historical records of the two regions.
