Research on the Spatial Evolution Characteristics of Digital Economy in China
【Abstract】 Based on China’s provincial panel data from 2013 to 2022, this study constructs a digital economy development index system from an input-output perspective. The entropy method is used to measure the digital economy development level of each province, the Theil index is applied to analyze the regional differences among the eastern, central and western regions, and Zipf’s law and Gibrat’s law are combined to explore the evolutionary characteristics of the spatial hierarchical structure of China’s digital economy. The findings reveal that there is a significant east-west gradient difference in China’s digital economy development level, but the regional gap is narrowing. The source of disparity has shifted from “inter-regional” to “intra-regional” dominance, with the eastern region exhibiting the largest internal disparity. The scale distribution of China’s digital economy follows Zipf’s law: medium-and low-ranked provinces are developing faster, indicating initial success of regional coordination policies. However, the concentration of the digital economy is increasing in the eastern region, while the central and western regions show fluctuating increases with higher dispersion. The Gibrat’s law test reveals significant spatio-temporal heterogeneity in the relationship between growth rate and initial scale. During 2013 to 2015, small-and medium-scale provinces grew faster in the eastern region, while large-scale provinces grew faster in the central and western regions. During 2016 to 2019, the national trend remained “small but fast”, with small-and medium-scale provinces in the east continuing to lead, while the central and western regions still relied on large-scale provinces to drive growth. During 2020 to 2022, the eastern region shifted to faster growth of large-scale provinces, showing a “Matthew effect”, whereas the central and western regions turned to faster growth of small-and medium-scale provinces, benefiting from the inclusive popularization of digital applications. In summary, precise and targeted regulation is needed to optimize the spatial development of the digital economy.
