Restoring “China with the Seas”
【Abstract】 This paper begins by citing a story from Record of the Listener to illustrate China’s maritime connections with the outside world during the Song and Yuan dynasties. The similarities and differences between this 12thcentury Chinese tale and the 18th-century Western novel Robinson Crusoe may shed light on where the comparative conceptions of Chinese and Western maritime merchants originate. The paper proceeds to critique the cliche of“nonmaritime China”and elucidate the significance of restoring the idea of“China with the Seas.”The paper points out that, under the dual influences of the Western“piracy of the sea”and Eastern self-localization(i.e., the“Oceanization of the sea”), the restoration of“China with the Seas”faces numerous challenges, particularly the entrenched cognitive inertia to view land and sea, past and present, and China and the West in binary opposition. To overcome this inertia, we should rediscover existing materials and ideas related to“relationship”and“communication,”and find new insights in them through reinterpretation.
