How Does Digital Literacy Affect Household Health Consumption?——Micro-Evidence from CFPS Data
【Abstract】 Improving residents’ digital literacy is both an inevitable requirement in the digital era and an important pathway to accelerate the release of health consumption potential and better meet the people’s needs for a better life. Based on data from the China Family Panel Studies(CFPS) from 2014 to 2022, this study employs Probit and Tobit models to empirically examine the impact of digital literacy on household health consumption and its underlying mechanisms. The findings reveal that digital literacy significantly promotes both household health consumption participation and expenditure, a conclusion that remains robust after addressing endogeneity concerns and conducting rigorous robustness tests. Mechanism analysis indicates that digital literacy primarily fosters household health consumption by enhancing information acquisition, increasing income levels, and strengthening health risk awareness. Heterogeneity analysis further demonstrates that the positive effect of digital literacy on household health consumption is more pronounced in urban areas, regions with high internet coverage, younger households,higher-income households, and non-agricultural employment households. Based on these findings, this study proposes several policy recommendations, including promoting nationwide digital literacy and skills, addressing capacity bottlenecks among disadvantaged groups, guiding residents to adopt a proactive health mindset and strengthening health consumption motivation, and accelerating the unleashing of health consumption potential to foster innovation and development in health services and products.
