【Abstract】 The Song Dynasty represents a pinnacle in the development of ancient Chinese culture, when the printing revolution and social transformations jointly shaped the diverse modes of women’s reading practices. However,as a “submerged current” in cultural history, women’s reading has long been neglected. This study comprehensively employs documentary sources, material evidence, and social network analysis to examine the dual effects of the widespread adoption of printing technology and social networks on the reading practices of women during the Song Dynasty. The research finds that upper-class women mainly constructed their scholarly reading systems through family-based academic traditions. In contrast,lower-class women relied more on religious scripture-copying activities, popular cultural dissemination, and oral transmission within families to acquire practical knowledge such as life skills and religious beliefs. The printing revolution led to a significant decline in the cost of books, facilitating the formation of a diverse book dissemination network composed of family libraries, monastery scripture halls, and marketplace bookstores. Among these, family library networks and religious communities emerged as important cultural spaces for women to break through traditional gender disciplines. Through text interpretation and knowledge production activities, women actively participated in cultural construction and reshaped their identities. The printing revolution not only lowered the barrier to knowledge acquisition but also prompted a shift in the reading practices of women of different social classes – from passive acceptance of “moral discipline” to active “engagement with knowledge”. Meanwhile, the expansion of social networks facilitated a continuous descent of culture, allowing women to transcend the boundaries of the “women’s quarters” and form implicit knowledge communities. These shifts toward agency laid a crucial historical foundation for the rise of the learned women culture in later periods, especially during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
